Community Fruit Orchard and Garden

The purpose of the Community Orchard and Garden is to provide for those in need and to promote the benefits of growing your own fresh, locally grown fruits and vegetables in an urban environment.  Apples, pears, plums, peaches, and more thrive in our area if cared for correctly.  Community projects, such as the orchard, help to improve people’s access to a healthy, affordable, and sustainable food source, and to improve community food security.

The Community Fruit Orchard and Garden program provides the opportunity to:

Involve the Family
The orchard and garden offers the perfect opportunity to spend quality time with your family in the outdoors.  This is a great opportunity to provide families with the knowledge and means to grow their own fresh produce and thus control their own food security.

Enhance Community Spirit
Get to know your neighbors. The orchard and garden help to bring the community together through cooperative care of the fruit trees and the garden plants.

Save Money
Grow your own low cost fruits and vegetables to save money in these tough economic times.

Promote Good Health
Nutritionists recommend that we eat five portions of fruit and vegetables a day. By harvesting your own, you can ensure that you have the freshest food available.

Growing your own food has been shown to reduce stress and offers the added health benefits of exercise, fresh air, and peace and quiet

Save Resources
By growing in our own community, we cut down on the energy and emissions that would otherwise be used to transport food to the local supermarkets.

Learn New Skills
Gardening skills are developed by growing your own food.
Moreover, food production is an ecological and sustainable means of economic development that addresses both hunger and hopelessness.

Tree Planting
Volunteers are always needed to help nurture the orchards and small fruits.  The tasks include general weeding, seasonal mulching, and pruning, and monitoring for pests and diseases.  Contact us for more information.
